I first got into the "sugar is bad for your health" frame of mind after reading Gary Taubes "Why We Get Fat and What To Do About It". The book made a lot of sense and following the advice has enabled me to lose about 25 pounds and (mostly) keep it off. Then I read about this book in a Guardian article on the Internet and so bought it for my Kindle. The book was written back in the 60's and 70's, so some of the information was a bit dated. Mr. Yudkin has since passed on. But the most interesting thing about the book for me, in addition to reinforcing what I read in the Taubes book, is that we have known about the bad health effects of sugar for decades, but it has only been in the last few years that this information is starting to seep into the consciousness of the general public in the US and elsewhere. For most of my adult life the mantra from the medical profession and the government has been that carbs don't matter, it is fat that matters. Based on that, I had tried to lose weight unsuccessfully for years by restricting fat and calories in general. It was so frustrating and unpleasant that I had despaired of ever getting any weight off. On the other hand, by restricting carbs, and sugar in particular, I have had much more success in getting and keeping the fat off. It is still a difficult diet to follow - but difficult is better than impossible any day.Mr Yudkin's book is not a diet book, but rather a compilation of his research into the medical problems caused by sugar consumption. It is an easy and fairly quick read, full of charming British-isms, and worth your time if you care about sugar consumption and your health.
